Bad breath affects everybody, but some are more affected than others. Halitosis, the term for bad breath that appears almost permanent, may smell like sulfur. If you suffer from halitosis, you are experiencing an imbalance of bacteria in your mouth. Bacteria typically breaks down food (a good thing), but some bacteria creeps into the corners of the mouth (a bad thing). Follow these tips to eliminate bad odors now.
1. Treat underlying health issues.
Halitosis can be caused by gum disease, sinus issues and bad tonsils. Treating these issues in addition to diabetes and gastric reflux may prevent bad breath from popping up day after day.
2. Take great pains to remove bacteria from your mouth and accessories.
Unfortunately, this means that you have to reach the back parts of the mouth where there is no oxygen. You need to brush your gums from top to bottom, floss those back teeth and brush your tongue. You can invest in a tongue scraper, but you should always be careful not to scrape off the top layer of skin or cause bleeding.
3. Take steps to remove dry mouth.
Saliva is your body's natural mechanism to rinse food and bacteria out of the mouth. When you experience dry mouth, you have a lack of saliva to clean up. Drink water, swishing some of it around your mouth, to ensure that you are not allowing bacteria to grow and thus smell.
4. Use mouthwash, but be careful about which one.
Alcohol-free mouthwash is the best choice, especially for those with halitosis. Alcohol tends to dry out the mouth, leading to more bacteria and a worse smell. Another reason to consider mouthwash without alcohol is that it doesn't burn when you swish it around.
5. Know which foods and drinks to avoid.
You probably already know that you need to avoid sugar to keep cavities at bay, but did you know that it is also contributing to your halitosis? Sugar is actually food for the bacteria causing your halitosis, and eating sugar means you are feeding the smell as well.
It is also wise to avoid caffeine, which dries out your mouth. Coffee, tea, soda and energy drinks all contribute to dry mouth.
Don't be too concerned if you have some terrible morning breath that seems to disappear when you brush your teeth. This is totally normal. Halitosis is much more serious and does not go away with most brushing.
